Modern tyre fitting companies are not equipped to perform centre lock wire wheel balancing. This can present a serious problem for classic car owners wanting to have their wheels and tyres balanced accurately. |
The problem stems from the fact that wire wheels are located by two tapered surfaces rather than a flat mounting flange and studs, used by pressed steel and alloy wheels. The inner taper is formed on the inner (back) end of the wheel centre. The outer taper is formed on the outer end of the wheel centre. When mounted on the vehicle these tapers engage with similiar tapers, one on the splined hub, and one within the spinner (lock nut). This aligns the wheel perfectly, and it rotates about its true axis. The splined teeth do not locate the wheel, their purpose is to transmit torque. If the wheel is mounted on the balancing machine, using any contact points other than these tapers mis-alignment will occur. It is pointless balancing the wheel while it is rotating about a mis aligned axis, because when it is mounted back on the vehicle splined hub it will move back onto its true axis, and be out of balance again! Using Smoothride cones eliminates this error making the balancing of wire wheels as easy as balancing pressed steel or alloy wheels. |
